Download the package

Android

Google Play: coming soon. The listing is prepared and waiting on review. Until it is approved there is no Play link to give you, so this page does not pretend there is one — download the APK directly instead. When Play approves it, this section will carry the store link and updates will arrive the usual way.

Two builds. Take arm64 unless you know you need otherwise — it is every Android phone sold since about 2017, and roughly a third smaller. The universal build carries the code for all three processor types, so it works on anything, including 32-bit devices and emulators.

Which build should I take?

Take arm64. If it refuses to install, the universal build will.

How to check what you downloaded

Why the download is large. Most of it is food data. The app carries 660,644 USDA foods — whole and basic foods, common prepared foods, and 646,950 branded and packaged products — all inside the download, because a nutrition app that needs a working internet connection to look up a tin of beans is not much use in a supermarket. There is nothing to install and nothing to fetch afterwards: it is searchable the first time you open the app.

Installing an APK

Android blocks app installs from outside the Play Store until you allow them, one app at a time. Open the downloaded file and Android will offer to take you to the setting; you are granting permission to your browser or file manager, not to this app, and you can revoke it immediately afterwards.

You will see a warning that the app comes from an unknown source. That is accurate: it means Google has not scanned it, which is exactly what “installed outside the Play Store” means. Check the SHA-256 above if you want to confirm you have the file that was published.

An APK installed this way does not auto-update. Come back to this page for new versions, or install from Google Play once it is approved. Your data is kept either way — but installing the Play build over a sideloaded one may require uninstalling first, which does delete your data, so take a backup from Settings before you switch.

The application asks for nothing on first run. The only permission it ever asks you for is notifications, and only at the moment you switch on your first reminder — decline it and that reminder simply does not turn on, and nothing else changes.

It requests no camera permission and no storage permission at all. A progress photo is taken by the camera app already on your phone, or chosen from your gallery; a backup or an export is written through the system’s own file dialog, into the folder you pick in it. Neither needs this application to hold a permission of its own, so it does not ask for one. The full list of what it does request is in the privacy policy.

Windows

Download the installer and run it. It installs for the current user, so it does not need an administrator.

PrimeEdgeSystems-1.0.1-windows-x64-setup.exe 80.4 MB 2e311ae72a575619c03e0e90ef5361c5ef4c7723c34337cab90d391a551fc130

About the SmartScreen warning. The installer is not signed with a code-signing certificate, because a certificate costs several hundred pounds a year and this application is free. Windows will therefore show “Windows protected your PC” the first time you run it.

You can check the download is the file that was published by comparing its SHA-256 against the checksum above. That is a stronger guarantee than a certificate, and it costs nothing. In PowerShell:

Get-FileHash .\PrimeEdgeSystems-1.0.1-windows-x64-setup.exe -Algorithm SHA256

If the hash does not match, delete the file. Do not run it.

Linux

Two downloads. The .deb is for Linux Mint, Ubuntu and Debian: install it with your package manager and it appears in your applications menu. The tarball is for any other 64-bit distribution, or for running without installing anything system-wide.

FileForSizeSHA-256
prime-edge-systems_1.0.1_amd64.deb Mint 21 or 22, Ubuntu 22.04 or 24.04, Debian 12 91.5 MB fd8e03e245d418dfff791c87429a609bfa6325158d8011ad0a86535baa691fbc
PrimeEdgeSystems-1.0.1-linux-x64.tar.gz Any 64-bit Linux with GTK 3 and glibc 2.34 or newer 129.1 MB e75f4895457af1c5ecde7b5cac4a4cb37d4dc4bc7ca7c2b588527d427d670f7b

The package

sudo apt install ./prime-edge-systems_1.0.1_amd64.deb

Or double-click it. apt rather than dpkg -i, so that anything missing is fetched instead of stopping. It installs to /opt/prime-edge-systems with a launcher at /usr/bin/prime-edge-systems, and sudo apt remove prime-edge-systems takes it out again. Removing it leaves your data alone.

The package is not signed by a distribution key, so your package manager will say it comes from an unknown source. That is what a package downloaded directly rather than from a repository looks like; the checksum above is how you confirm it is the one that was published.

The tarball

tar xzf PrimeEdgeSystems-1.0.1-linux-x64.tar.gz
cd PrimeEdgeSystems-1.0.1-linux-x64
./install.sh

No sudo. It installs for the current user only, into ~/.local, and writes nothing outside your home directory. A menu entry appears once it finishes. To remove it, run ./uninstall.sh from the same folder — it deletes the program and then asks, separately, whether to delete your data.

Two honest notes. The Linux build is compiled on the developer’s Windows machine inside WSL2 running Ubuntu 22.04, and that is also where it has been run: it launches, draws, installs and removes cleanly through install.sh and through apt, and both installers join the food library to the byte the manifest expects. It has not yet been run on a native Linux desktop — Mint on a laptop, say — by the author before release. If something does not work, it is worth telling us rather than assuming it is you.

It is built on Ubuntu 22.04 deliberately: the binary needs glibc 2.34 or newer, and building on anything more recent would have quietly dropped Mint 21 and Ubuntu 22.04. Ubuntu 20.04 and Debian 11 are older than that floor and will not run it.

The 660,644-food library ships inside both downloads in thirteen pieces. install.sh joins them into one 295 MB file beside your database, checks it against its published hash and deletes the pieces, so the library costs 295 MB once — the same as on Windows. The .deb does the same join once for the whole machine, into /opt, and links it into each user’s data folder the first time they run it. (Because of that, dpkg -V will list the thirteen deleted pieces as missing. It is right, and it is deliberate.) If you unpack the tarball and run the binary without installing it, the application does the join itself on first launch instead, and the pieces stay.

Checking what you downloaded

Every checksum on this page is also in one file: checksums.txt. Compare the hash of what you downloaded against it. On Windows:

Get-FileHash .\<file> -Algorithm SHA256

On Linux or macOS:

sha256sum <file>

If a hash does not match, delete the file rather than opening it. That check is worth more than any signature this project could afford, and it costs nothing.

Where your data lives

PlatformLocation
Windows%APPDATA%\Brandon Mysliwiec\Prime Edge Systems
Linux~/.local/share/com.primeedgesystems.app
AndroidApp-private storage

Deliberately not your Documents folder. On Windows that folder is usually redirected into OneDrive, and a live database inside a cloud-sync folder is a documented way to corrupt it — besides uploading your measurements and photos to a third party without ever asking.

Moving between devices

Settings has a backup that writes one file containing your database and every photo. Copy it wherever you like and restore it on the other device. The backup is not encrypted, so keep it somewhere you would keep any other personal record.
