Chapter 26

Rippling Effect & Leading by Example Journals

One reflection page combines the book’s two journals about influence. It records an action, the response actually observed, and possible wider effects kept explicitly uncertain. The learner controls the example offered, not another person’s choices or an imagined chain reaction.

A small start

Describe the action and its immediate context. Be specific about what you did without inflating it into a leadership achievement.

When to use it

Use after modeling a behavior, offering practical kindness, or noticing that others may have adopted an idea.

How to use it

  1. Describe the action and its immediate context. Be specific about what you did without inflating it into a leadership achievement.

  2. Record the direct response, if one was observed. If nobody commented or the outcome is unknown, that is a valid entry.

  3. Use a separate space for possible ripples. Someone doing a similar thing later may have been influenced by many sources; label the connection as possible unless the person actually confirms it.

  4. Reflect on the example set: honesty, patience, preparation, or respectful boundaries. Consider what the behavior communicated even when it did not attract attention.

  5. Choose one behavior worth continuing because it is appropriate in itself, not because it might gain followers. Ask before mentoring or teaching someone who has not requested help.

  6. Review several entries for patterns and limits. Avoid tracking other people as proof of your impact, and keep identifying details private when they are not necessary.

A worked example

A practical illustration of the method.

Invented example: A student puts shared supplies away and later notices another student doing the same. The entry records both events and says the connection is unknown. When the second student later says the organized shelf helped, that comment can be added without claiming credit for every later cleanup.

Use it thoughtfully

Treating sequence as proof that one action caused another.

Expecting others to copy or praise the behavior.

Using a kindness record to monitor recipients or claim ownership of their progress.

From the book

A special section in your notebook where you write down acts of kindness you perform and then think about how those actions might create a "ripple effect" that helps more people than just the person you directly helped.
