Chapter 19: The Evidence Binder

The Evidence Binder

The Evidence Binder preserves a record of completed goals and meaningful progress. Mr. Hunter keeps photographs, certificates and written accounts, then moves an achieved dream’s picture and stories from the wall into the binder. Reviewing the record can remind the reader of actual learning and effort. Its evidence is personal documentation, not proof that the book’s method caused every success or that future outcomes are assured.

A small start

Choose an accomplishment with an observable basis. State what was done and when, avoiding claims that are broader than the evidence supports.

When to use it

Use when a goal has been achieved, a skill has improved, or discouragement makes past work hard to remember.

How to use it

  1. Choose an accomplishment with an observable basis. State what was done and when, avoiding claims that are broader than the evidence supports.

  2. Collect a suitable item: a photograph, finished work, certificate, dated note or drawing with an explanation. Obtain permission before including another person’s private information.

  3. Add a short account of the starting point, the work involved, help received and a difficulty encountered. Naming help does not diminish the accomplishment.

  4. Place the original goal, purpose story and imagined achievement story with the actual record. Note differences between what you pictured and what happened.

  5. Review the binder when useful. Look for a strategy worth reusing, such as asking for instruction or practicing in shorter sessions, rather than treating every past result as repeatable.

  6. Choose the next goal or a period of consolidation deliberately. Update the wall when appropriate, and keep the record honest if an earlier skill needs refreshing.

A worked example

A practical illustration of the method.

A learner finishes a short model-building project. The binder includes a picture, the date, the original plan and a note: “I measured the pieces; Dad used the cutting tool.” Another note explains that the first base was too small. The entry records both competence and support without pretending the learner built everything independently.

Use it thoughtfully

Do not invent a success or omit essential support to make the record impressive.

A photograph of a result does not establish why it happened.

Keep sensitive records offline or private; a public tool page need not collect children’s evidence.
